By Jamila Bala

It could not have come at a more appropriate time; the harmattan season and its attendant ferocious dry wind is here. Those who knew need to be reminded, while those who don’t know need to be taught and trained on how best they should safely conduct themselves both in the office and at home during this period and how to safely respond to emergency situations. Indeed, every weather situation has its peculiar challenges and most effective respond strategy. The in-house training on Emergency Preparedness and Response held this week is therefore an exercise well thought of and timely conducted.

By way of introduction, the HSE Unit in collaboration with the Learning and Development Unit conducted training on Emergency Preparedness and Response with Practical Drills to staff of the Head Office. Starting from Tuesday, 19th November, 2019 through Friday, November 22, 2019, the staff on each of the seven floors in the building took turn to undergo the training and practical drills.

The Head, HSE Unit, Engr John Cletus Adamu, described the safety training as a fulfilment of both legal and social obligation that requires all employees to be aware of the hazards in their work place, how to avert unwanted life-threatening incidents/accidents and how best to respond to emergency situations.
He stressed that the HSE objective of the Company as enunciated by the Managing Director/CEO in the Company’s safety policy is to attain zero accident in our places of work and homes.

He warned the participants not to take fire alarms or any emergency alert for granted. “All early warnings in form of fire alarm, terror attack alert and any form of disaster warning must be responded to immediately, all should move to safe grounds (muster points) and assemble for head counts to be conducted”, he suggested.

In his contribution, the Team Lead HSE, Engr. Gimba Saleh, explained to the participants how to administer first aid assistance to victims of accident, how to resuscitate persons suffering from cardiac or respiratory challenges and how to handle various fire extinguishing devices.

Some participants interviewed commended the Management for the initiative and called on the Management to extend similar gesture to the Area Offices.
