Kaduna Electric Female Staff Celebrate International
Women’s Day, Resolve to Take Action For Equality
By Asmau Mohammed
The female workers of Kaduna Electricity
Distribution Company joined their counterparts from across the world to
celebrate this year's International Women's Day with the theme “I am generation
Equality: Realizing Women’s Right” with a round table discussion held on
Tuesday, 10th March, 2020.
The United Nations has set aside the 8th
day of March every year as the International Women’s Day to create awareness on
the plight of women globally and generate discussion on how best the women folk
could be more productive and equal citizens of the world as their male
counterparts.
Off course this year was not different
and the theme: “I am generation Equality:
Realizing Women’s Right”, shines the
spotlight on the imbalance in most public and private organizations, where the
females workers only occupy 10% of the available positions and often faced with
numerous challenges such as conscious bias, discrimination and gender
misrepresentation among others.
It was in a bid to address these issues
that Organizational Development and Design Unit organized a round table meeting
for all the female staff; the event focused on individual actions, discussions,
behavior and mindset that will accelerate progress of women across all spheres
of life with particular emphasis on the power industry.
The meeting was chaired by the Chief
Technical Services, Engr. Bello Musa, who appreciated the women and called
on them to go the extra miles to achieve
the impossible things.
“I have admiration for women that is why
I married 3 wives and I believed with
them behind me, I am a successful. In the last year's Awards Nite, the women
carted away most of the awards. For example, during the last MD’s award, Engr.
Asma’u Ahmed, the only female Area Manager then, collected almost all the
trophies and she was the overall best”, he said.
In his contributions the Chief Marketing
and Revenue Assurance, Mal Ibrahim Abubakar Jimeta, described a ''woman as
supporter, motivator and a good organiser; any responsible man must respect a
woman because there is always a woman behind any successful man; there is
nothing you can not do but you have to take the challenge, don’t hide yourself; you can do better than what you are going
right now, just open your eyes and take the opportunities”.
In her contribution, the Company
Secretary, Bar. Maryam Usman Mohammed described the event as a good one as it
would positively explore the huge potentials women’s existing in Kaduna
Electric have.
Bar. Maryam shared part of her life
history; how she handles challenge, proffer solutions, and uses all
opportunities.
The Head, OD&D, Adeola Akanni
appreciated all the women in the Company and charged the female staff to brace
up and face the challenges as their male counterpart.
''I must admit that women are not doing
well in this company not because we are incapable, rather we always tend to
limit ourselves and hardly utilizes our opportunities, I believe you have the
required talent to turn things around, with that I urge you to challenge
yourself we need women at the higher levels,” she said.
