Community Engagement Helps Our Collection - Abdulqadir
Mal. Mas’ud Salisu Abdulqadir, BDRO Zaria |
By Halima Shuaibu
The
Business Development and Relationship Officer (BDRO), Zaria Area Office, Mal.
Mas’ud Salisu Abdulqadir, has said that community engagement has to a large
extent contributed to the improved revenue earnings of the company.
Abdulqadir
made this revelation when he received some staff of Corporate Communications
Department who were on a visit to Zaria recently.
He
noted the paltry amount being collected by the Zaria Area Office’s when he took
over and his determination to face the daunting task of improving the revenue
of the area.
According
to him, the first thing was to sensitize the communities through the
traditional leaders, Military and Paramilitary to address the myriad of issues
ranging from energy theft, illegal reconnection, poor energy management,
vandalization and non-payment of bills.
“The
entire collection for the whole area was just about 100 million but with our
continuous interaction with the people and so many other strategies we now make
about N269 million. And when we found out that customers were
reconnecting themselves after disconnection, it took the involvement of the
traditional rulers to manage the situation”.
Head
Of H.S.E Mourns Staff, Calls for More Safety Awareness
By Nafiu Kabir
The Head, Health, Safety and Environment
(HSE), Mr. J. C Adamu, has called on staff to be more safety conscious in the
discharge of their duties or face penalty for non-compliance.
Adamu gave the warning when he
visited the Kebbi Area Office following a recent case of electrocution at the
Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, which led to the death of one person
while another was left in a serious condition.
Addressing the engineers, he warned,
“You all have to be reminded of the safety policy which emphasizes staff safety
first. Every job must be preceded by a safety analysis so as to alert you of
any impending danger and any staff not complying with the Safety rules will be
punished accordingly”.
The Safety Officer lamented the
apparent complacency among staff on security matters noting that such attitude
is capable of exposing them to harm.
“We have lost one of our most
hardworking staff, Daniel Ibrahim Tukur and another one, Sannusi Umar is
currently in the hospital. You don’t need to be told that everyone is prone to
danger. The issue of safety is everyone’s business and must be made a priority
for yourself and your colleagues”, he said.
Explaining further, Adamu said that
the loss will not only affect the family of the deceased but his contribution
to the company will be greatly missed.
He went on to task the technical
staff to comply with safety procedures by filling the Work Permit form and
ensure that the Distribution Engineer (DE) dully signs it and it is reviewed by
HSE Officer/Representative.
The use of Personal Protective
Equipment (PPEs), he stressed is, compulsory and not meant for “decoration”,
pointing out that the company invested heavily in their procurement.
The HSE Supervisor, Kebbi Area
Office, Nuhu Umar Dabai enjoined the Service Engineers to internalize all that
has been said.
Dabai also disclosed that Kebbi Area
Office has just recently serviced Twenty-Eight fire extinguishers for all the
Injection Substations.
Sokoto
Area Office Holds Safety Workshop
By Umar Mohammed
Staff of the Engineering and
Technical Service Department of Sokoto Area Office recently attended a one-day
training on Safety Rules.

hazards in work places, which he said are capable of causing harm.
“Engineers and Technicians work with
electricity and therefore more vulnerable to the danger it poses which is why
it has become imperative for us to train and update you on safety standards and
requirements”.
In a lecture titled: “Managing
Safety in Business” delivered by the Health, Safety and Environment Officer
(HSE), Sokoto Area Office, Mr. Abdulazeez Ahmed, he noted that: “Accidents
don’t just happen for the sake of it, they are caused by direct consequences of
committing unsafe acts or allowing unsafe conditions to exist in a work place”.
He however emphasized the need for
proper accident investigation, which he said, would help uncover facts/causes
rather than apportioning blame. These facts, according to him will form the
basis for making recommendations that if adhered to, will help prevent
recurrence.
Speaking on the benefits of safety
awareness to the business, Ahmed said: “It will enable the company attain and
maintain zero level of accident occurrence. It will also reduce to the barest
minimum or completely eradicate the loss of scarce resources like human and
material resources, machine, method or technical know-how which is sometimes
difficult to replace”.
On the consequences of non-safety
compliance, he said the losses arising from unsafe acts have direct impact on a
business as they erode profit margin; he emphasized the need for continuous
orientation and re-orientation of the workforce before they are mobilized to the
field.
The participants were given some
safety materials at the end of the session and were taught how to use them.
Customer Feedback
Comment
on Service delivery:
Payment process not stressful but when I
come to vend sometimes there would be network downtime which makes me wait
longer than expected. I think your
services have improved in terms of the number of hours we enjoy electricity
from night till morning which is quite commendable.
